Efficient space utilization is important in many rackmount computer applications. However, it is critical that one make the most out of the limited component mounting space available in a military aircraft, ground vehicle, surface ship or submarine. Of these Mil-COTS defense applications, it’s the submarine that has the most limited space available for installing rackmount components. The server-room in the photo below is from a Virginia-class submarine, and you can see that there isn’t a lot of room available for rack mounting LCD monitors or keyboards. In addition, size, weight and power (SWaP) are critical.
