No doubt, you've heard all the industry hype about quad-core Core i7, Nehalem and now Jasper Forest processors. It's getting tough to keep all the different CPU technologies straight and more importantly being able to separate the performance facts that we care about from all the marketing hype.

Trenton recently introduced a dual processor single board computer called the Trenton JXT6966. This new SBC features dual, quad-core processors based on the Nehalem-EP core microarchitecture. These processors were developed under the code name Jasper Forest and carry the official brand name of the Intel® Xeon® C5500 Series processors. These processors have built-in memory controllers and PCI Express® Gen 2.0 links. The JXT6966 design takes advantage of these new processor features by using a single component chipset called the Intel® 3420. I would like to share a few benchmark results from our engineering lab.

Nehalem JXT6966 benchmarks

When you run the SiSoft 2010 memory bandwidth benchmark test on the JXT6966 SBC, the results really show the performance advantages of having the board's memory interfaces connect directly to the processors. The chart below illustrates an overall memory bandwidth performance increase of approximately 440% with the Intel® Xeon® EC5500 (Jasper Forest) architecture compared to the non-Nehalem Intel® Xeon® E5400 architecture.

This is just one benchmark test result for the Trenton JXT6966. Other results show other performance advantages. Contact us at 770-287-3100 or email us at ttisouth@trentontechnology.com for a complete benchmarking test report for the Trenton JXT6966 single board computer. Hopefully, this information will help you make some informed decisions about your next rackmount computer system design.
