Trenton’s Technical Capabilities

As a supplier of board-level products and integrated systems to many sectors within the embedded computer industry, Trenton’s technical capabilities are unique in many ways.  For over 30 years we’ve been designing and manufacturing high-performance board-level products inside the United States.  From PICMG 1.0/1.3 single board computers, system host boards and PCI backplanes to embedded motherboards and MicroTCA (uTCA) processor AMCs (PrAMC).

Engineering

Systems engineering is the focus at Trenton, as all of our board-level products will eventually become part of an integrated computer system deployed to address the needs of a critical application.

Electrical -  Every system host board, single board computer, embedded motherboard and backplane that’s featured on our website was designed by the Trenton engineering team.  As one of the founding member companies of the PCI Industrial Computer Manufacturers Group (PICMG). Trenton played a key leadership role in writing and publishing major industry standards such as PICMG 1.0 and PICMG 1.3.  Beyond our standard product line, Trenton is able to create custom versions of these products in order to satisfy our customer’s unique program requirements.

Mechanical -  Packaging our board-level products into steel and aluminum enclosures designed to deal with very difficult thermal issues and withstand the effects of shock and vibration is the mission of our mechanical engineering team.  We’ve designed a full line of 1U to 6U rackmount computers and small shelfmount systems, as well as a family of rugged solutions and MIL-STD-810 military computers, each of which can be modified to meet our customer’s exact specifications.

Software -  In the embedded computing world, system BIOS lies at the heart of every system solution.  Responsible for critical functions such as initializing system devices, support for power management, IRQ assignment, enabling security options and loading the operating system.  American Megatrends (AMI) is Trenton’s supplier of system BIOS for all board-level products, yet we also maintain in-house expertise which allows us to modify BIOS parameters and functionality to meet the needs of our customer’s most demanding system configurations.

Manufacturing

Trenton Utica Circuit Board Assembly

Utica Circuit Board Assembly Facility

Once the design process is complete, Trenton manufactures all its board-level products in a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility located in Utica, New York.  This 120,000 square foot, ISO 9001:2008 certified facility, specializes in printed circuit board assembly utilizing state-of-the-art Surface Mount Device (SMD) placement machines and technically advanced solder systems.

Strict quality control standards are maintained during the fabrication and testing process and inspections are performed at each critical stage on the factory floor.

In addition to offering CE and UL certification, the factory maintains a humidity-controlled environment and adheres to stringent Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) requirements.  Vision Inspection Systems and In-Circuit Test (ICT) equipment, along with EPC Programmable Optical Inspection Stations, are used in the Utica manufacturing facility to ensure the highest quality product.

Integration

Trenton Gainesville Integration Facility

Gainesville Integration Facility

Trenton’s system integration process occurs in a 16,000 square foot facility located in Gainesville, Georgia.  Trenton offers an extensive array of rackmount and shelfmount enclosures that can be integrated with our US-made single board computers, system host boards, backplanes and embedded motherboards.

Using a customer-driven approach, each system is designed & built based on unique application requirements.  Recognizing that these systems must operate at top performance levels when deployed in harsh environments, attention to detail is the hallmark of Trenton integration.

Systems Engineering Development Phases

The chart above illustrates the systems engineering process that Trenton follows in order to bring advanced computing technology to the marketplace.  From board-level design to manufacturing and integration, every decision we make reflects our commitment to building high-performance products that are fully compatible with industry standards.  Our use of long-life components at the board level, combined with the attention to detail employed during the system assembly process (seen below) ensures your customer-drive solution will operate reliable in the most demanding environments.
