Transportation Management Centers Get Visual Upgrade

by Mark Lovett on June 30, 2011

Addressing the need to increase operational efficiency while providing enhanced security capability, Transportation Management Centers (TMCs) have become commonplace in large metropolitan areas and regional transportation corridors.  Increasingly these centers are also becoming more integrated with Emergency Operations Centers (EOCs) as a way to improve incident response effectiveness.

The advent of advanced Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), along with the development of new security and surveillance technology, has dramatically improved the ability of local, state and federal agencies to share critical information, thus increasing real-time situational awareness.  Whether the challenge at hand involves a common traffic jam, or deals with natural disasters or terrorist incidents, transportation centers need the most accurate and influential information available.

Transportation data comes from many sources and arrives in many formats:

  • Operational – live video feeds of traffic flows and localized weather
  • Recorded – incident logs, traffic records, audio and video recordings
  • Physical Infrastructure – maps, terrain information and building plans

Increasingly, however, the visual component has become the most important piece of the equation, and that’s where video wall technology comes into play.  Video feeds from stationary, ground mobile and aerial cameras generated by law enforcement and emergency response teams can be displayed together as a way to provide transportation managers with a cohesive view of developing situations.

Maximizing Video Inputs & Outputs

Recently showcased at InfoComm 2011, the Matrox Mura™ MPX Series display wall controller boards were designed to provide the density of high definition inputs and outputs required by demanding applications such as traffic management centers.
